Many chemicals have been developed for the control of plant pathogens. The majority are fungicides, though antibiotics are also used for bacterial diseases. There are no chemicals for controlling viruses and viroids.

Many of these chemicals are permitted in organic agriculture and accepted in organic horticulture.
