BIO

Clay McGlamory was born in San Diego, California on May 28th, 1970.  In 1978 he and his family moved to Okinawa, Japan where they traveled extensively throughout Asia before moving to the Tidewater area of Virginia.  His experiences in the South Pacific and Asia changed his outlook at an early impressionable age, enriching his appreciation for other cultures as well as his own.  He went to 6th through 12th grade in Virginia Beach where his interest for visual art began to thrive.  Clay moved to Norfolk where he went to Old Dominion University (ODU) for his BFA and attended the joint program between ODU and Norfolk State University for his MFA graduating with honors.  He has taught printmaking and design courses for ODU as an Adjunct Assistant Professor since 1999 and has taught printmaking and book arts for the Governor’s School for the Arts since 1994.  Clay has had 15 solo exhibitions including The Red Door Gallery in Richmond, Virginia in 2009, The White Canvas Gallery in Richmond, Virginia in 2006 and The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 2005.  His work has been included in over 120 national and international juried and invitational exhibitions and has won awards for printmaking, book and mixed media works.  He was one of the 2007 recipients of the SURDNA foundation grant for artists teaching in art specialty high school programs.  Clay is an active, participating member of the Southern Graphics Council and the American Print Alliance.  He has given workshops in a variety of media, worked as a master printer, completed commissioned site specific installations, curated exhibitions and organized print portfolios that have been exhibited in many venues across the country and are in national collections.  The majority of Clay’s current works are large back lighted screenprint installations and monoprints on colored and clear Acrylic sheets, he also works in lithography, collograph, book arts, and creates mixed media assemblages.  His work is in numerous public and private collections, including a recently installed, 18 foot long, back lighted, permanent commission work in the Batten Arts and Letters Building on the campus of ODU.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My recent work involves creating optically charged images on clear and colored sheets of acrylic.  These works are a continuation of my exploration into the formal qualities of color, light, shape, and pattern, which I have been building upon in my work since the early 1990's. Many of the mixed media installation works in this series are multi-layered and lighted from behind, further pushing the optical and hypnotic qualities of these works by highlighting the incredible depth and luminosity inherent in these pieces.  My ideas for creating these works came from my interest in Op art and my experimentation with the properties of kaleidoscopes, tessellations and repetition of patterned imagery.  I start out by examining photographs I have taken until I find the right image or image fragment.  Then I manipulate the images bigin the computer and create positive films and transferable imagery.  Next I screenprint, paint and transfer the images in a variety of vivid colors and orientations on multiple panels.  Finally I collage these individual units together on the walls to make interchangeable kaleidoscopic grids and installations.  My intention is to use repetition of form, vibrant color and aesthetic distance in the large grids and installations so the works become hypnotic and entrancing. My goal in these works is to be visually intriguing and to figuratively assault the viewers’ optic nerves.
