History of the Nembe People of Nigeria

The Nembe People of the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria are a very industroius predominantly fishing community. Nembe the main settlement of the Nembe people is approx 10 nautical miles off Brass Island which is located at the tip of the famous Brass River. The people speak Nembe, a variant of the predominantly Ijaw people of Bayelsa State of Nigeria. Nembe has a long history of maritime tradition and commerce with the Europeans and was perhaps the earliest point of contact with western education and the christian religion.Bimbo Ayuba, is a writer and maritime expert and author of Kalemie Memoirs of a United Nations Military Observer in the Democratic Republic of Congo, (Lagos:Blessed Oresanya Press, 2005).
