[edit] How do you use images from Wikipedia?

Hmm?

wikipedia:image:Mini_uzi_right.jpg? --Cyberman 07:54, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC) Image:Wikipedia:Mini uzi right.jpg? Image:Mini uzi right.jpg? wikipedia:Mini_uzi_right.jpg? There must be a way.. please list it.

Cyberman, I don't think that you can interwiki link to an image, unless it's on [Wikimedia Commons], then every Wikipedia project can link to it like it was a local image. For example, [[Image:Wellington City Night.jpg|thumb|800px|centre|Panorama of Wellington from Mount Victoria at night.]] would show you one of my images from the Commons:
Panorama of Wellington from Mount Victoria at night.
Panorama of Wellington from Mount Victoria at night.
So you could simply upload a copy of your image to the commons, but you would need to ensure that the image was available under a free licence. Unfortunately, the image you have chosen is not (it claims free use, and that doesn't count as a free licence).
Your other alternative is to upload a copy directly to Wikibooks. But you would need to be careful to attribute the source of the images (i.e., who uploaded it to Wikipedia, and link to their user page, etc.). I don't know what Wikibook's policy is on non-free images, but I doubt that it is as restrictive as the Commons (see Bobdoe's question below).
I hope that helps. (Donovan|Geocachernemesis|Interact) 08:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use?

Call me stupid, but I can't find anything in the policy about fair use images. Are we simply not allowed to use them? -- Bobdoe (Silence) 04:05, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Updating this policy

The policy seemed outdated. Since it is only "proposed" policy, I decided to change it. I will shortly make these changes:

  • Remove instructions on how to link/embed images in wiki pages.
  • Allow use of SVG. The server can now render SVG files, so the comment stating that the server cannot do this is outdated.
  • Require all images to be tagged (consistent with Special:Upload).

--Kernigh 00:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

I tried to do this, but I mostly replaced the page. I tried to be consistent with the text already at Special:Upload. I also added a fair use section, but it might need more work.
I explained that SVG images work, but I removed the list of Wikibookian-recommended image software... --Kernigh 22:23, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No to GFDL

I added section about preferring CC-BY-SA over GFDL. GFDL is not a license written for images and we should discourage people from using it. Forcing users to print whole text of the license with one little image makes this license IMO non-free when applied to images. --Derbeth talk 08:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

The GFDL states that if multiple documents (images and pages of text, in our case) are combined into a single large document, or an "aggregate", that the aggregate only needs to be accompanied by a single copy of the GFDL license, and not one copy for every image, etc. With that in mind, considering that the print version of a book already should include the text of the GFDL, images that are under that same license do not require an additional statement of the license.
That said, I do agree that the GFDL is not a license designed for use with images, and that the CC license is probably a better choice for use with them. However, I dont think that the argument "The GFDL is too verbose" is not a good argument to use. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects)

[edit] Control Systems/Licensing

This is a page that i've been working on in conjunction with the Control Systems wikibook. On this page, i've created a table of the images used in the book, in addition to the name of the person who uploaded the image, the location of the image, and the license under which the image is released. It is my hope that something like this helps to satisfy the licenses, while at the same time providing attribution to the authors of those images. What do other people think of this effort? --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 22:05, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Upload to Commons

Shouldn't the policy recommand images be uploaded to Commons over uploading to English Wikibooks when/if the image uses an acceptable Common's license? If I understand correctly, that seems to be the recommended practise. --darklama 23:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

That would be only a small change of wording, and not a change at all to the spirit of this proposal. If you think we should recommend that, put it in. Of some note, there have been a few projects that have mandated that all images must be uploaded to commons. So it's not an unheardof practice. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 02:03, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
I wasn't sure thats why I was asking first. About some projects manadating it, there does seem to be a trend here I think to require all images be uploaded to Commons unless the image in question won't meet Common requirements, which from what I gather would limit only "fair use" images being allowed to be uploaded to English Wikibooks. --darklama 02:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
I personally think that all images should be uploaded to commons instead, except perhaps for a few exceptions. However, such a change to this policy would consistute a massive change to the structure of the wikibooks policy, and is not something that we sould consider lightly. I suggest we make this draft official as is (or perhaps change the wording to "prefer" commons), and work on the bigger issues later. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 03:00, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
But would it be that big a difference from what is common practice? It even says on Special:Upload 3. If uploading an image and the licence is compatible with Wikimedia Commons, please upload it there. Usually only images that are used on Wikibooks under "fair use" rules should be uploaded here., so shouldn't this proposed policy reflect that? I suppose that doesn't exactly state that people should do so. --darklama 03:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
I dont think there is any problem specifying a preference, but I don't think that we should mandate anything new here. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 03:18, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
