[edit] Proposal to merge Wikibooks:Duplicate articles to Wikibooks:Duplicate modules

I am proposing the merger of these two pages. Further, I note that the instructions for using the Template:merge, Template:mergeto, Template:mergefrom, and Template:merging (red link) on the Duplicate articles page are incorrect. I want that the instructions are corrected, the correct instructions are put on the Duplicate modules page, and that Duplicate articles redirects here. I might attempt the merge soon. Comment here. --Kernigh 00:39, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

  • Merge is complete (including User:Krischik's edits to the duplicate articles page). --Kernigh 21:58, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Redundancy

(moved text from Wikibooks:Staff lounge)

I notice a systematic occurence of redundancy. For example in already three books the same topics on probability are discussed. Not always correct, and not always consistent. I consider this a problem. Is it solvable?Nijdam 23:39, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Link to the 3 books? Do they all go in depth on probability, or do 2 of them give a brief overview of the subject? Consistancy and correctness can obviously be fixed with time and effort by some contributor. Merging books is a bit harder- more political. --Gabe Sechan 23:59, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
I know that i've thrown together a few sections on probability in in the Signals and Systems book, and i know perfectly well that some of the stuff i said is incomplete (and if my mind was off at the time, the stuff might be completely wrong). The beauty of having a collaborative community is that the people who know the correct answers can come in and tell people what's up. --Whiteknight (talk) (current) 20:38, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I also notice redundancy. Have you seen the "merge" tag ( Template:Merge ) ? --DavidCary 05:09, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Move to help?

This page seems to be evolving into the direction of the Help namespace and a rename. How does Help:Merge sound? It certainly doesn't seem to be about duplicate modules in the same way Wikibooks:Forking policy. --Swift (talk) 21:11, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking the same thing, that this would be better in the help namespace. So I've gone ahead and done just that. --darklama 23:47, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Over-merging?

From where I sit, there appears to be a trend towards overmerging. Traditionally there have been multiple textbooks on any given subject, to support different voices and approaches to delivering a topic. There's certainly some overlap, but it enables people to find a textbook that suits there own particular style. We don't want to discourage that, IMO. --Irrevenant (talk) 08:04, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Wikibooks does already encourage/allow multiple books on the same subject if they have difference approaches, different scopes, different target audiences, different styles, etc. Merges usually only happen when there isn't any noticeable differences or when contributors want a merge. How different books must be from each other tends to be subject to opinion, but feel free to update this help page to reflect that. --darklama 10:24, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
