Media files such as images, audio or video often provide an excellent compliment to brilliant prose. Just as with any content that you upload, the copyright status must be compatible for use at Wikibooks. That means that the files must be at least as free as the GNU Free Documentation License. Please see Wikibooks:Media for our official licensing restrictions.

[edit] Wikimedia Commons

Wikibooks, just like all of the Wikimedia Foundation wikis, can use files uploaded to the Foundation's media file repository, Wikimedia Commons. All files that qualify for use at Wikibooks, with the exception of fair use files, can be uploaded to Commons.

Files on Commons are available for any language version of any Wikimedia project. Commons also has many volunteers dedicated to organising them to make them easy to find. Uploaders are therefore encouraged to upload to Commons. Should the Commons licensing policy allow it, files from other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, rather than Wikibooks. See the Move a file to Commons section for more.

Files from Commons can be used just as files on Wikibooks. The Wikibooks logo is an example. Go to the Wikibooks logo file description page and you'll see a notice with a link to the Commons file description page.

[edit] Existing files

Before you upload any files, please try searching Wikimedia Commons and Wikibooks. Because both already contain a large number of files, you are quite likely to find suitable files that have already been uploaded.

[edit] File types

There are many file types that can be uploaded, the most common are GIF, PNG, JPEG, and SVG. The filename should end in ".gif", ".png", ".jpg", or ".svg" respectively. The server automatically renders SVGs as PNGs so you don't have to worry about users having browsers with SVG support.

[edit] Uploading

If you plan to upload to Wikimedia Commons and are not familiar with the project already, read their first steps guide before uploading. Remember that Commons does not allow fair use files.

If you plan to upload to Wikibooks, follow the steps below.

[edit] Select the right license

Ensure the file is under a free license, in the public domain or that fair use applies.

  • The Creative Commons Attribution and Attribution-ShareAlike licenses, as well as the Free Art License are examples of acceptable licenses.
  • Licenses that prohibit modification or commercial use is not acceptable. For example, Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs is not acceptable unless fair use applies.
  • Screenshots of free/libre software that are themselves released under free licenses, such as the GNU GPL.

Avoid the GFDL as it can result in serious inconveniences when applied to images. If you want to use GFDL for images, we recommend using the GFDL in combination with the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license, in order to give people a choice depending on how they intent to use the images.

You can find a list of Wikibooks copyright tags at Wikibooks:Templates/Files. All files must be properly tagged within 7 days of being uploaded, or they will be eligible for deletion.

[edit] Upload the file

You must be logged in to upload files to Wikibooks. New users have to wait four days before being able to upload.

  1. Go to Special:Upload to upload your file. This link is in toolbox towards the bottom of the side menu (below the Wikibooks logo).
  2. Describe your file; give the source of the file (preferably a URL). If you made the file or hold the copyright, say so.
  3. Choose the correct license or fair use option from the menu. This automatically inserts a file copyright tag such as {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}, {{GFDL}}, or {{screenshot}}.

[edit] Move a file to Wikimedia Commons

Any user can upload acceptable files to Wikimedia Commons. To move a file to Commons, upload it to Commons keeping all required information intact, and than tag the Wikibooks copy, with {{nowcommons|filename on Commons}}. A local administrator will then know to delete the file.

You can alternatively use CommonsHelper to upload files to Wikimedia Commons. CommonsHelper will ensure that all required information is kept intact. After using CommonsHelper, you will have to tag the file with {{nowcommons}}.

[edit] Copyright issues

Files with incomplete or no image copyright statments should be tagged with {{subst:nld}}.

Files which are suspected to be in violation of copyright should be tagged with {{copyvio|http://source.of/the.image}}. Any user can send a Wikibooks:Boilerplate request for permission to the author of the file to request licensing it under a free license.

Unless the copyright status has been cleared, the file will be automatically considered a candidate for speedy deletion after seven days and an administrator may delete it.

Consistently uploading content without license despite warnings is considered disruptive behaviour and may result in a block.
