Transwiki is the process of moving pages between two wikimedia wikis.

[edit] What Transwiki is

The transwiki namespace is used as a temporary location for contents moved to Wikibooks from other Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia. Content that is not appropriate for other Wikimedia projects might be appropriate at Wikibooks, if it fits our inclusion criteria. Content that is suitable for Wikibooks can be added in the transwiki namespace, and then moved or merged, where appropriate, once a more suitable home has been found outside of the transwiki namespace.

[edit] What Transwiki is not

The transwiki namespace is not the correct place to add new contributions. Pages in the transwiki namespace should not be edited, except to sychronize pages with the original source document or in preparation for moving pages to a more appropriate home. If a page in the transwiki namespace needs to be edited beyond what is described here, it should first be moved to a more appropriate namespace, and then edited as usual. Because of the nature of the transwiki system, it is not the correct place for experiments or tests of wikiformatting or the wiki software. If you want to test something, do so in the Sandbox instead.

[edit] Import Tool

New pages in the transwiki namespace from Wikipedia should only be added by an admin using the Import tool (see Wikibooks:Import Policy for details). The import tool allows wikibookians to bring new materials to Wikibooks, while at the same time preserving the original edit history of the page. Maintaining this edit history is important under the terms of the GFDL. To request a page be imported to Wikibooks from other Wikimedia projects post your request to Requests for Import.

[edit] Copy and Paste Transwikis

Pages transwikied from projects from which we do not have the import tool enabled need to be carried out using the copy-and-paste transwiki process. The following steps need to be followed in order to comply with the copyrights:

  1. Open the edit window of the page to be copied from the other project, and copy all the text there.
  2. Create a new page in the Transwiki: namespace (do this by pointing your browser to the page http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Transwiki:PAGENAME (if a page already exists there, choose another name).
  3. Paste the text into the edit window, then save.
  4. Make a note of the entry on the Transwiki log here on wikibooks.
  5. Either copy the contribution history of the copied page from the other project, and paste this onto the Transwiki module's talk page (alternatively, if the material is unlikely to be deleted on the other project, just give a link to that page's history).

[edit] Transwiki procedures

Import can only be carried out by wikibooks administrators. See Wikibooks:Import Policy for the rules regarding transwikis from wikipedia.

[edit] Moving pages out of the Transwiki namespace

[edit] As a book stub

If the transwikied module is to be used as the basis for a new book, the new book should be categorised and tagged with {{New book}}. Please do not create a new book if you do not plan on expanding it, as abandoned book stubs do not tend to get developed, so it's better to just leave it in the transwiki namespace if you aren't going to be making something out of it.

[edit] As a chapter

If the transwikied module seems appropriate for an already-existing book, it should be announced on the talk page of the book's main page. If a contributor wishes to add it to the book, he or she should make sure it conforms to the narrative and style of the book in question, because wikibooks does not have a generalised Manual of Style like wikipedia does.

[edit] Cleanup process (on wikibooks)

After a page has found a new home, a few steps should be taken to clean up the process. The page should be checked for double-redirects, all links pointing to the transwiki namespace should be updated to point to the module's new location and if possible, any links made from the project of origin should be updated, in order to attract contributors who might improve the content.
