Glossary of Astronomical Terms/Doppler shift
From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection
The shift in frequency due to an object moving away or closer is known as the Doppler Shift. Objects moving away from the observer become become redder, and the wavelength increases. Objects moving closer become shifted towards purple, and the wavelenght descreases. The measuring of the red shift of distant objects tells how fast they are moving away from Earth.
