Chapter 18

Evelyn and Ed are getting ready to go to visit his mother. Evelyn hates going to the nursing home. It reminds her of her mother's death from cancer eight years ago. She goes because Ed is sensitive about his mother. She has an overwhelming fear of dying and reads the obituaries every day to see the ages of the people who have passed away. Her fear of doctors turned to hatred after her mother's death. The doctor had come into the room and coldly told Evelyn and her mother that her mother's lung cancer had spread to several other organs. Evelyn hadn't even told her mother she had cancer. She still remembers the look of terror on her mother's face. Two days later, her mother had gone into a coma and was disconnected from life support.
