The picture of the Gull I have used is a commons featured picture Image:Gull portrait ca usa.jpg, I copied it locally and renamed it gull.jpg just to make it simpler. In the same directory, I created a file called caption.tex and I put the following code in it:
\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\usepackage[english]{babel}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
\begin{figure}[!h]
\caption{A picture of a gull.}
\begin{center}
\includegraphics[width=0.5\textwidth]{gull}
\end{center}
\end{figure}
\begin{figure}[!h]
\begin{center}
\reflectbox{\includegraphics[width=0.5\textwidth]{gull}}
\end{center}
\caption{A picture of the same gull looking the other way!}
\end{figure}
\begin{table}[!h]
\begin{center}
\begin{tabular}{| l c r |}
\hline
1 & 2 & 3 \\
4 & 5 & 6 \\
7 & 8 & 9 \\
\hline
\end{tabular}
\end{center}
\caption{A simple table}
\end{table}
Notice how the tables and figures have independent counters.
\end{document}
Then I compiled it with pdflatex thus getting caption.pdf. Then I converted to PNG with the following Linux command:
convert caption.pdf caption.png
I cropped it with GIMP and optimized it with optipng
