Plot of the conduction velocity of myelinated (red) and unmyelinated (blue) neurons in cats. The curves are published theoretical fits to experimental data in (1) JB Hursh (1939) "Conduction velocity and diameter of nerve fibers", American Journal of Physiology, 127, 131–139; and (2) WAH Rushton (1951) "A theory of the effects of fibre size in the medullated nerve", Journal of Physiology, 115, 101–122. Based on Figure 12.13 in K. Schmidt-Nielsen, Animal Physiology: Adaptation and environment, Cambridge University Press.
