Summary

Description
English: A case where the cross section is angled θ with respect to the longitudinal axis. In this case, we can resolve the force P along and perpendicular to the section. The force components are, P cosθ and P sinθ respectively. The area of the cross section is now A / cosθ. The normal stress is σθ = P cosθ/(A/ cosθ) = (P/A) cos2θ. Similarly, the shear stress is τθ = (P/A) sinθ cosθ.
