Eskaya Literature

This Wikibook is a collaboration initiated by Piers Kelly, a PhD candidate at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies of The Australian National University.

Piers is looking for native speakers of Visayan (either Boholano-Visayan or Cebuano-Visayan) to help translate some of the written stories of the Eskaya cultural community of southeast Bohol.

Mugna' enmonsektor Pinay Bisayan Bool, Bohol karon. Mugna' sa tuig sayesentos gikan sa pagkatawo ni Hesus kaugalingong gahom sa Pilipinas.

The enmonsektor Pinay created Bool Visayan, now Bohol. The native power of the Philippines was created in the year 600 from the birth of Jesus.

Maoy unang kinaadmanon dinhi sa kapupud-ang Bisayas. Maoy tag-eya sa mugna bande nga Pilipinhon, plano dahon sa yutang Pilipenhon.

He was the first wise man here in the Visayan islands. He was the owner of the created Philippine flag, the plano leaf of the land of the Philippines.

Walay pagtolon-an, walay bande, walay dahon, walay planong kaugalingon.

Without knowledge, without a flag, without a leaf, there is no native flag.

Matod sa kachila bandera. Sa Bisayan palano uban pagtulon-an kaugalingong. Matod sa Englatera American flag. Sa Bisaya' dahon sa Pilipenhon, pinaagi sa pagtulon-an kaugalingon bande kalig-unan sa kaugalingnan. Kaugalingnan sa nasod elhanan sa pagkanasod giingon sa England, American flag, giingon sa Espanes bandera giingon sa Bisayan pano bande.

The Spaniards say bandera. In Visayan it is palano, our native knowledge. In England it is American flag. In Visayan it is the Philippine leaf. Through our own native knowledge, the flag is the strength of independence. The independence of a nation is the mark of its nationhood. They say American flag in England, bandera in Spanish, plano (bande) in Visayan.

Sinugdan sa tuig sinkowentay singko, pelimirong mugna' enmonsektor Pinay, gikan sa tuig pagkatawo ni Hesus. Si Hesus, ikatulong bahin sa tinoohan sa tibook kalibutan.

Beginning in the year 55 from the birth of Jesus, Pinay was the first enmonsektor to be created. Jesus is the third part of the whole world’s faith.

Dinhi sa Pilipinas Bisayas, daan dunay kaugalingong tinoohan sa edad pagkata ni Hesus trayentay dos, natawo ang kaugalingong tinoohan dinhe sa Bisayas Boow, Salbador Mono, ang gikatawhang yuta' sa Marabuyok Booy Dawis ang inahan Guardalope, ang amahan si Lumono.

Here in the Philippines a native faith existed 32 years after the birth of Jesus. Our native faith was born here in the Boow Visayas, Salvador Mono, the birthplace of Marabuyok, Booy, Dawis. The mother was Guadalupe, the father was Lumono.

Sa wala pa moabot ang mga katsilang tawo taga banwahanon taga Furtogeses Magallanes ningpanaw paingon sa pulo' sa Ostralla ikaduha panaw sa naulahe pulo' sa Sumatra Singgapora, ikatulong panaw sa eslas Bisayas Morahol, Samboanga, ikaupat panaw Boow.

From the citizenry of Portugal, Magellan travelled towards the island of Australia before the Spaniards arrived. His second journey was to Singapore, the last island of Sumatra. The third journey was to the Visayas, Moraho and Zamboanga. The fourth journey was to Boow.

Ning Magallanes, ningtakas sa pulo' Pangaw. Ning Magallanes uban ang iyang mga kuyog pagsuroy-suroy, Ning Magallanes nagsubay sa dakbayan Pangaw sa wala madugay ningsaka sa balay ni Angaw.

Magellan went roaming with his companions.

Magellan passed through the city of Pangaw whereupon he went straight up to the house of Angaw.

Kumo ang Katsila ug Bisaya wala magkasinabot nga maong Angaw, nag-ingon si Magallanes, unsa ning eslaha ning maong Angaw ningtubag, Angaw ngalan ko,ang Katsila nagkanayon Angaw, Angaw Angaw. Ning maong Katsila, Ning balik sa ilang gowago balsa maong ugis pontrikol ga-op sa piduylan sa balsa gowago.

Since between Spaniard and Visayan there was no understanding of the one called Angaw, Magellan asked what the island was called.

Whereupon Angaw replied, ‘My name is Angaw’. The Spaniard said ‘Angaw, Angaw, Angaw’. The said Spaniard returned to his gowago balsa, with the white pontrikol gaop sapi duylan ya balsa gowago.

Badbad sa Bisaya: Nanguli sa ilang sakayan nga dako'.

Translated from Visayan: They boarded their large vessel.
