De Mei ~ May |}

poetry

Mei[edit | edit source]

Herman Gorter (Wormerveer, 26 november 1864 - Brussel, 15 september 1927) wrote a -rather lengthy- ode to the month of May in 1889; here are the first few lines. The very first line is more or less a saying now, meaning something like: someone is making some changes here! The spelling is pre-1947 and the differences with today are given in blue.

Translation • Example 7 • De Mei
A new spring and a new sound:
I want that this song sounds like the whistling,
That I often heard before a summer night,
In an old little town, along the canal --
In the house it was dark, but the silent street
gathered dusk, at the sky light still shone
late, a fair golden radiance fell
over the gables of my windowsill
Then a boy blew like an organ pipe
The sounds shook in the air as ripe
As young cherries, when a spring wind
Ascends in a little bush and begins its journey.
He roamed over the bridges, on the shore
Of the water, going slowly, unaware
Of his own gladness about the evening's quiet
And many a tired man, who took his evening meal
Listened, as if to an old tale
Smiling, and a hand that closed the window,
Hesitated a moment while the boy blew.
Thus I wish this song to sound,...
