Sulfur dioxide is an antioxidant used as a food preservative. It allows apricots and light-colored grapes to be dried without darkening. Many people find yellow raisins and yellow-orange dried apricots to be more attractive than brown ones.

Consumption of foods containing sulfur dioxide can cause painful lung irritation and unusually smelly farts.
