The kilogram or kilogramme (old BE), or kilo, abbreviated kg, is a unit of weight. It is equal to 1000 g or about 2.2 lb. 1 kg of water occupies 1 liter of volume.

As many recipes have been approximately converted from one system to another, a similarly approximate conversion back may yield the original recipe. To avoid weird sounding recipes, when converting recipes from one system to the other, one should always round quantities up or down to the nearest reasonable unit, e.g. quantities such as 11½ ounces or 347 grams should be rounded to 12 ounces and 350 grams respectively, and so on. Approximate conversions are as follows:

Kilogram US customary measure
0.3 2/3 lb
0.45 1 lb
0.5 1 lb
0.5 1.1 lb
0.9 2 lb
1 2 lb
1 2.2 lb
1 2¼ lb
1 35¼ oz

[edit] Note

  • Although sometimes disregarded, especially by anglophones, the rules of the Société Internationale (SI), state that metric abbreviations should never be capitalized, i.e. it should always be written "kg", never "Kg". The only exception is 'Litre' which may be abbreviated as 'L' in the US, Canada and Australia.
