Brewing is an ambiguous term. It can mean:

  • Steeping – soaking ingredients to extract some flavour, either because it is desirable (as in tea or undesirable (as in salt from salted meats)
  • Beer making – mashing grains, boiling wort, fermenting to get beer; usually followed by quaffing
  • Fermenting – not accurate when applied to most fermented beverages (e.g. one does not "brew" cider, mead, or wine), but the term is commonly used this way nonetheless
