According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are approximately 17 million students enrolled in campuses across the United States. Approximately 2/3 of the students live off-campus.

Both the National Fire Protection Association and the US Fire Administration identify the very young and the elderly as high-risk groups because they have a higher-than-average loss of life from fires in comparison to the rest of society. However, in college communities, the highest-risk group is often college students because of the high number of students and their riskier behavior.
