Bypassing Internet Censorship/Software
From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection
This is a simple and very effective method for defeating software censor programs, such as NetNanny or Cybersitter. Download or otherwise aquire a live-CD Linux distribution, like Knoppix or Damn Small Linux, and boot into it. Because the software would not have loaded the internet access would be free from censorship. This could of course cause problems for people connecting to certain dial-up connections that require proprietary software and in other uncommon situations. Another variation is to use an emulated live-CD Linux distribution, such as the embedded Damn Small Linux package, to view the pages that are censored within the window. The second method HAS NOT been tested yet, and it is your own fault if the pages are still filtered and you are caught. However, Damn Small Linux embedded still has the option to install Tor, a network layered on top of the internet. The traffic from Tor will be near impossible to trace and will certainly break through most filters. This also allows users who cannot install software on their PC (no administrator priviledges, etc.) to still use Tor and other censorship-defeating methods.
