Buying the Right Stroller
From Wikibooks, the open-content textbooks collection
When a new bundle of joy is added to your family, a stroller is one of the most important pieces of equipment you will buy. No matter where you go, a stroller should be a safe, comfortable place where your baby can relax and view the world. Unfortunately, too many people think that all strollers are alike. This is simply not true! Just as there are differences between a Mercedes and another less expensive vehicle, so it is the same with strollers. They can all get the job done, but you could go through a lot of headache if you buy a stroller that is not right for you.

There are many different types of strollers out there and it may be confusing to someone who is new in the game. Different strollers have varying features and these are what classifies them.
Umbrella Strollers These are the lightest strollers available and are super compact so you can take them anywhere. This makes it a convenient stroller to take on trips to the mall, or for short strolls. However, the umbrella stroller does have its downfalls. There is often very little padding in the seat and no storage or sun canopy. They are also suitable only for older children. Many families own an umbrella stroller in addition to a standard stroller because it is easier to transport.
Umbrella strollers can be purchased for as little as fifteen or twenty dollars; however, you get what you pay for. If you are willing to spend a little more you can get a beefier model with some extra features.
Standard Strollers Heavier than an Umbrella stroller, the Standard stroller is....well, standard! Most families choose these as their primary stroller because models offer well padded seats, sun canopies, and large storage compartments. They are usually equipped with reclining seats and can be used for babies as well as toddlers. Manufacturers also offer a wide variety of accessories to go with their models. These can include rain covers and cold weather boots.
Standard stroller prices include such a wide range that anyone can afford. Finding the perfect stroller depends on how much you would like to spend, and what features are most important to you.
Travel System Strollers Don’t want to disturb you baby’s slumber by moving him from the car to the stroller? Then you might want to try a travel system. These models include a car seat that easily attaches to its matching stroller. Infants can use the car seat until they are old enough to sit comfortably in the stroller.
Travel Systems are more costly than a standard stroller, but you get a car seat out of the deal as well!
Jogging Strollers A new trend for manufacturers is the Jogging stroller design. These strollers come equipped with three large wheels which are ideal for maneuvering over rough terrain. These strollers usually have all the features of a standard stroller, but in a more compact and streamline design.
Be careful when buying a stroller and make sure it is a true “jogger.” Many companies have adopted the three wheel design on models that are not meant to be used for such vigorous activity.
Jogging strollers are still a relatively new trend and you can expect to pay a little more for the luxury of an all terrain stroller.
Carriage Strollers A “Carriage” is just another name for a standard stroller, but it usually refers to models where the baby faces you. This is attractive to parents who like to keep and eye on their baby. The seat usually reclines 180 degrees to accommodate infants or sleeping toddles. Pram Strollers These are the old-fashioned strollers that attract people because of their charm and sophisticated elegance. They include a bassinet for infants to lie flat. There are a few downsides though. Since these strollers only have bassinets they can only be used for babies up to three months. Some manufacturers do have toddler attachments, however, so do your research. In addition, the elegant style does not fold up easily and can be a pain to transport.
Prams can be a huge luxury not only because of their limitations, but because of the price. The elegant style comes with a huge price tag that could be a deal-breaker for some.
High Capacity Strollers This type of stroller is for families who need to cart more that one child around. You can purchase a double stroller all the way up to one with six seats so there are lots of options here. For double and triple stroller you can choose between a side by side or inline models. While the side by side has its maneuverability advantages it might be a tight squeeze through doorways. Inline models can fit in smaller areas but makes wide turns. Make sure you test drive one of these to see how it steers and if it fits your needs.
Because you are not buying just one stroller, but the equivalent of two or more, these are obviously more expensive. Depending on the brand and materials these strollers can be pretty pricey, but considering what your sanity is worth you may not mind shelling out a few extra bucks.
[edit] Manage Your Moola
Before you start shopping be sure you set yourself an amount that you can spend. This will help narrow down your options right away. Many websites sort their stroller by price so you can browse your options without being tempted by a more expensive model.
Another good rule to follow is to not buy the “best” stroller you can afford. Look for bargains. You may find an inexpensive stroller that has everything you are looking for! Then you can spend your extra cash on something else for baby.
[edit] Usability and Utility
Where will I be using me stroller? What will I be doing? How long will I be using it? Where do I live? What is the weather like? Is the stroller for indoor or outdoor use? Where will I store it?
All these questions might seem overwhelming, but they need to be asked. If you will be using your stroller for malling then maybe consider a model with smaller wheels. If you will be going off the beaten path, then bigger wheels and shelter from the elements are a great feature to have. If you live in the city choose a model that is light, compact, and easy to maneuver. If you live in a suburban area and will be taking your baby for walks, consider a heavier model with storage. For country dwellers, a stroller with large wheels and good suspension is essential for handling the terrain.
Something else you must consider is how long you want to use the stroller. Prams are only useful for infants. Travel systems can grow with your baby, as well as many standard strollers that feature reclining seats. Newborn babies are not able to support their head and must lay flat in their stroller. When the baby gets older the seat can be propped up so your toddler can see the world.
[edit] Fix your Features
Each model comes with a variety of features and the trick is to see which ones are right for you. You might have to decide between weight or storage, maneuverability or a trendy design, but on the whole you should be able to find a stroller that has everything you need. Before shopping make a check list of the features that are important to you.
Basket Capacity Once you decide where you and baby are going, you need to decide what you need to take with you. How much storage does that require? Do you need a basket that can fit a large diaper bag, extra clothing, and lunch? Or would a pocket for your keys and a cup holder work better for you? Be sure to check dimensions so you can take all your supplies wherever you need to go.
Weight Again, you need to ask yourself where you will be taking your stroller. If you need to transport your stroller you may want to research the lighter models. Heavier strollers are likely to be well built and loaded with features, but it may not be worth it if you hate to lug your stroller around.
Folding and Storage The “one handed fold” is a very popular feature now. More and more companies are catering to the parent who never has enough hands. Be sure to try folding your stroller of choice at the store if at all possible. This will let you see how easy it really is to fold.
After folding your stroller away think about where it will need to fit. How big is your vehicle? Will your stroller fit in the trunk? What about when you travel and your stroller needs to come too? Will you have enough room for all the luggage? Check the measurements to be sure your stroller will fit. Maneuverability If it is possible – test drive a stroller before you buy! This will avoid a lot of trouble down the road. Test how easy you can make a turn, if you can fit though a narrow isle, and if the handlebars are high enough for you. Many of the newer models now feature adjustable handlebars which are a relief for taller parents. Color Strollers now come in a variety of snazzy colors and prints, but how do you know which one to choose? First think about your baby. Dark colors absorb heat and may make your baby uncomfortable. On the other hand, light colors tend to show stains. They are good for night walk though, as they tend to be easier to see.
Also think about the next little one who will be in the stroller. Purchasing a pink stroller may not be practical if the next baby is a boy! It is safer to stick with neutral colors because you never can tell.
Upkeep No matter how hard you try to avoid it, little ones are going to make messes. Be sure to take this into consideration when purchasing a stroller. Some stroller models conveniently allow you to remove the seat for washing. Others sell seat covers to keep any mess off the upholstery.
Accessories First, check out what comes with your stroller. Does it have cup holders or a snack tray? What accessories are important to you and your baby? If they are not included, many manufacturers make accessories to go with your stroller. Many sell rain covers, sun shades, cold weather boots, and even cup and snack holders. Just one more thing to check out before you buy.
[edit] Conclusion
Buying a stroller can seem very overwhelming, but just think about what is at stake. This is for your babies comfort, but you also have to be comfortable pushing your stroller around. The more research you do the better decision you will make. Some people say there is no perfect stroller…but maybe you can prove them wrong and find a stroller that you absolutely love.
