Traditionally plants have only been classified according to scientific criteria. With modern computers, however, the trend has been to replace classification with a database of criteria and their states to facilitate searches on particular critera so as to obtain a set of plants which have been defined according to the criteria the users seeks.

With an adequate database plants can now be classified on the fly for any particular purpose the inquirer may have by simply searching the plant database to eliminate whatever plants exclude the criteria being sought. Plant classification is now dynamic and a matter of whatever purpose the user has.

An agriculturist for instance might seek a list of plants based on the following criteria:
