Mead is an alcoholic beverage produced from fermented honey. Its strength can vary, but most commercial mead varieties have a similar alcohol percentage to wines. It tends to be quite sweet, with an obvious honey flavour.

[edit] Mead Varieties

  • A spiced mead is known as a metheglyn or metheglin.
  • Sack mead is especiall sweet mead.
  • Especially sweet spiced mead is a sack metheglin.
  • A mead produced with fruit added is called a melomel. However if the fruit is grapes, it would be a pyment.
  • If both fruit and spices are added to the mead, a hippocras is produced.
  • Cyser is a mead produced by fermenting honey with apple juice.
