GML, stands for game maker language, and is simple to use, its almost like asking it to do this and that.

There are many ways to do gml, such as script, libs, and dlls. but i will just cover an aspect of its main area. In an object, you choose an event, and drag in execute code. The code you may find tuts at many places especially on the GMC. There is many things to do in the code, but there is one easier code that is very simple if you're only needing one variable, these come at SET VARIABLE, and TEST VARIABLE.

Yoyo games is now the official producer of game maker, having taken the reins from Mark Overmars, some people thing this is bad, but actually this is generally good as it makes updates come faster, thus meaning more features.

GMC is the game makers community, where there is a huge community of people with one thing in common: They all use game maker. This is a helpful community, where you can play, or test others games and programs. You can also request sprites and sounds, even a team. And maybe, one day, you may help them.
