The easiest way to solve a quadratic equation is to factor the problem. Steps:

  1. Make "Y" a zero.
  2. list all the factors of "a" in y=ax²+bx+c.
  3. List all the factors of "c" in y=ax²+bx+c.
  4. See which factors can be used in such a way that when added or subtracted together they equal "b"

[edit] Example Problems

y=x²+2x+1

  1. a=1 1*1=1
  2. c=1 1*1=1
  3. b=2 1+1=2

0=(x+1)(x+1) or 0=(x+1)²
