## Problem 1

A set of stamps

The picture to the right shows stamps, arranged in four groups of four.

How many stamps are in that image? While you can count them individually, there is a much faster way of getting the total.

Looking at their arrangement you may notice that there are 4 sets of four so you could do
$4+4+4+4=16$
In our lesson we mentioned that multiplication is shorthand for repeated addition so we could write this
$4\times4=16$
indicating 4 sets of 4.
