Problem 1[edit]

Tony and Aaron's aunt came to visit. She gave each of the boys 25 marbles. Tony won 12 marbles from Aaron during the visit. How many marbles did Tony have after they played?

Tony started with 25 marbles. Tony won 12 marbles from Aaron.

\ 25 + 12 = 37 marbles

Problem 2[edit]

Tony and Aaron go to the park. They can see 17 turtles sunning themselves on an island in the middle of a pond around the lake. As Tony and Aaron circle the lake to count the turtles they hear 24 plops as they scare more turtles from the shore. How many turtles do Tony and Aaron know live in the lake?

17 turtles on the island. 24 plops as turtles jump in the pond.

\ 17 + 24 = 41 turtles

Problem 3[edit]

Tony's teacher is grading the math tests for his class. He has graded 16 math tests, and has 11 more to grade. How many students are there in Tony's math class?

16 math tests graded 11 math tests to grade

\ 16 + 11 = 27 tests

Problem 4[edit]

Tony and Aaron live 3 miles from the park. Today, their mom said she will first drive 2 miles away from the park to pick up their friend Luke before driving to the park. How many miles does Tony and Aaron's mom have to drive to take the boys to the park?

Mom has to drive 2 miles to Luke's house. Tony and Aaron's House is 3 miles from the park.

This means that Luke's house is \ 2 + 3 = 5 miles from the park.

Mom had to drive an extra 2 miles to pick up Luke. So Mom had to drive \ 2 + 5 = 7 miles to take the three children to the park.

  • \ \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{8} = \frac{3}{8}
  • \ 5 + -2 = 3
  • \ 7 + -9 = -2
