Introduction[edit | edit source]

Fatigue life is influenced by virtually every thinkable aspect of the applied loading history, such as:

  • Stress amplitude
  • Mean stress
  • Loading frequency
  • Waveform
  • Loading direction
  • Combined effect of complex stress filed
  • Chronology

The effect of some of these influences can be quantified with fairly good accuracy whilst the effect of other influences must be regarded in a more qualitative sense.
