Articles[edit | edit source]

Kyrgyz has no separate definite article that would correspond to the English “the”. For example, the word “китеп” can by itself mean either “a book” or “the book.”

That said, the word бир (“one”) is often used in situations where the English indefinite article “a/an” would be appropriate.

мен бир мугалим менен сүйлөштүм -- “I spoke with a teacher.”
I       a     teacher   with        spoke

This can have a somewhat stronger indefinite sense: “бир мугалим” is like saying “some random teacher.”
