The early colonists were not strangers to theater. Some early theaters built during this era still stand today. During the 1700's, many Puritans believed the theater to be "the Highway to Hell".

Vaudeville was not a place, but rather a style of performance. Mistakenly, many people today will refer to Vaudeville-style shows as "variety" entertainment. Vaudevillian entertainment venues existed all over the world.
